Resting in the hands of Almighty God

Last weekend, I held a ten pound infant in my arms. We were at a church event and all the kids were having a blast! There was laughter, food, games and music. Everyone was having a good time.

Holding this baby in my arms was an important task. I had to shield him and protect him from all hurt, harm and danger- seen and unseen. I even felt compelled to protect what we heard.

The music was blaring; yet, he wasn’t bothered. Not as nearly as much as me. I thought: his ear drums are like the size of peanuts, his lungs the size of tea bags and his brain, the size of an apricot. All I wanted at that moment, was to shield this precious new child from a secular world.

Today, I reminisce on this. God feels the same way about us. He’s holding us in His hands. Wanting to shield and protect us all from the ungodly contents of this world.

So, on this day Lord God, I thank you! I thank you for new grace and new mercy on this day. I thank you for covering me. I feel your mighty, compassionate hand on me. I pray this day be a day spent, that is pleasing in your sight. I pray for the opportunity to share your goodness, to uplift and encourage whosoever is in need of your word. For all that you’ve done for me, how could I ever repay you? I love you Jesus! I love you Holy Spirit! I love you Heavenly Father! In Jesus name, I pray, Amen.

The eyes are made to see

We get what we came for-
*Matthew 6:22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.”

*A quote by Thomas Manton, “Your eyes are the guardians of your heart.”

*2 Corinthians 11:14 “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”

You ever watch a horror movie and afterwards scared out of your wits, because you believed some evil force was out to get you? As an adult, you even slept with the lights on?

The word supernatural is used for good or evil. The good has the intention of blessing you in a mighty way. For instance, many prayers include the words, “May God give you supernatural insight and wisdom to see through the devil’s lies.” Then the evil has the intent of producing fear, doubt or guilt. For example, supernatural films, closely linked to paranormal, have themes of ghosts, demons, spirits…used to frighten those who watch it.

But what do we expect when we watch movies like that? The movie is intended to make us scared. And they do this in honesty. Meaning they tell us the truth about what type of movie it is, so we know its intentions before we watch it. That’s why they’re called horror and thriller. You want drama, then watch drama. You want suspense, watch suspense. You want humor, then watch comedy. You want romance, then watch romance. Certainly, you will get what you came for.

I’m always taking inventory of what I watch. Especially when my enthusiasm for purpose is dull. Because, what I see transfers information to my heart and mind. It gets downloaded there, transcribed there and ultimately gets saved to hard drive (my soul).

I have to be mindful of what I watch. Not only for my sake, but for my children. Because what I see and perceive will always affect those around me. I watched Game 3 of NBA finals last night. And I was hyped. My daughter said, “Wow mom, you must really love this game.” I’m one of those people that only watch the finals in any sport. Nonetheless, I was in awe of Steph Curry. His team-mates, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson were out injured so the outcome relied heavily on Curry’s actions; how well he can play the game. He had the weight of Game 3 on his shoulders. His love for the game of basketball was inspiring. Just when I thought he was physically tired, he would fight to gain possession of that ball. What I was watching, impacted my mood and behavior so much, that my daughter noticed.
Today, I make the commitment to guard what I see and what my children see.

The Focused Ant

It’s something how I can be fixated on one particular thing; especially if it’s fascinating. Like, ants. Yes, the insect ants! I don’t hear what they’re saying to each other. However, by the way they move, I can sense what they’re communicating. The other day I videotaped a group of ants, attempting what I thought was the impossible. They worked to get this wasp down a crack in the pavement. Amazingly, at some points I would see the wasp shift a millimeter, but that was about it.
Fast forward to some time later, the ants were successful. But how? During my observation, they never stopped to take a break. They kept at the same pace. It was amazing. They knew exactly what to do and that was: keep working that thing. It was like they had no choice in the matter.
We’re different than the ants. In the way, we have a choice to abort the mission. We have a choice to say “Whatever- the kingdom is good. God will get the glory at a different time, or in some other way. Just not now because this is impossible and I’m tired.” But to the ants, that queen must eat to reproduce. End of story. They know nothing else. What if I had the same mentality as the ant? Just what if- I approach God’s purpose for my life with a one track mind like the ant? Of course, we’re more advanced than the ant. But just think for one minute- what if we take the same focus as the ant and surround ourselves with others that are just as focused. Surely, we can get a lot done here!

I AM my own best friend.

I’m sure the rapper Ice Cube was referring his song: “Check Yourself Before You Wreck Yourself” in a different manner than what was revealed to me.  Nonetheless, this song title says what I know to be true.  I have to check my inside voice because she’s here to wreck havoc- she’s vile!  And dangerous.  And she kills confidence and dreams.  She disparages very hope I wish to have.  She’s uneducated- because she only has one train of thought.  She’s obnoxious and intrusive.  And she was apart of me.

I wondered why the advice I tell others is not the I tell myself.  My council to myself is so mean: “You need to do this.  You should do this.  You gotta be better- better- better…” But my advice to others, even new people I don’t know, is always uplifting and in love: “You can do it.  You’re awesome.  Trust the process.  You’re not perfect, no one is.  Be gentle and kind with yourself.”  It’s always words of hope, founded in the word of God.

I understand, many of the things that happen in my life are to build upon what I already have- it’s character-building at its finest.  God is in the character-building business.  Even though, I understand this process, I’d typically look at opportunities as something I may mess up.  So anxiety is there because perfection is there then I miss the lesson.  The opportunity is there to refine character.  And our inner voice should serve as a moral of support.  To help build something in us, that we usually don’t realize it needs to be built. When people say “Listen to your inner voice” that’s only effective if your inner voice serves you into your best self!

Therefore, it’s time to replace the criticizing voice with the sincere, motivating life coach. It’s time to cast out that disapproving, nitpicking, judgmental, faultfinding, unsympathetic, belittling voice inside.  And welcome the voice of stillness, kindness, gentleness, praising, accepting, love, sympathetic and understanding- my authentic voice!  My voice of innocence and wisdom that makes me faithful and true!

Affirmation: I AM my own best friend. 20190503_105016_00006181359640949167477.png

The Deep Waters

Proverbs 18:4
“The words of the mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a rushing stream.”
Amazingly, the bible also indicates that intentions of the heart are deep waters; as well as words of a man’s mouth. So, we have intentions and words as deep waters.
Which made me dive into (not literally)- what is the meaning of deep waters? In other translations, and also reading about Noah and his situation with the flood, deep waters refers to the ocean (underground water).
This verse continues to strike me for some reason. Why would God refer what comes out of our mouth and the intentions of our heart to an ocean? And then it hit me, like a tide coming in to breathe.
So, journey with me on this…
Deep waters can bring tranquility. There’s nothing more serene than watching the still waters of the ocean. The sound of its constant waves has put millions of people to sleep at night. Shout out to You-tube. Its massiveness illuminates my mind, enhancing its ability to imagine and dream bigger. When I stand in front of an ocean, it’s like I become more alive; and time stops!
Deep waters can bring devastation. One tsunami can wipe out thousands, just like that, without any warning. As we just seen recently in Indonesia; which the death poll has surpassed 1,900 people. Deep waters can be a part of a great flood, wiping out living creatures and homes. They can bring destruction like a hurricane. They can be treacherous and cause death.
Intention is what deciphers the ocean’s movement: whether it will be vengeful or calm. What has your heart’s intention and mouth been moved/conditioned/prepared to do? For instance, an earthquake moves the ocean into a tsunami. Just like heartbreak moves our mouths to speak words of bitterness; which, spills into the lives of others.
I like to challenge us all. To be conscious and consider the value of every word we speak internally and out loud. Are you speaking a tsunami that will destroy others’ dreams, confidence, their hopes…? Is your internal dialogue causing hurricane after hurricane in your own life? And it’s not even hurricane season. Or, are you speaking words of stillness that will calm the restless? That will give hope to the hopeless and wisdom to the understanding?
